Woman died in A1 crash after husband 'fell asleep at wheel'

A MAN accused of causing the death of his wife in car crash fell asleep at the wheel, a court was told yesterday.
Tracy Mickleburgh, 40, died after the crash on the A1 at Stamford in july last year. It came just days after she was reunited with her long lost son Michael Godfrey-Jull.
But their reunion ended in tragedy when her husband Brian fell asleep at the wheel as he drove them back to the family home, a jury was told.
Leicester Crown Court heard how Mickleburgh, 66, had had just a 90-minute "nap" in 32 hours while ferrying the delighted pair around the country.
His wife, 40, suffered severe chest injuries when their Volkswagen Passat left the road and hit a tree on a central reservation at around 35mph.
Mr Godfrey-Jull, 19, was a passenger in the back seat but survived the crash. He and his mother had met for the first time in 16 years only days earlier after he was taken into care at the age of three and then adopted.
On the day before the smash the Mickleburghs drove from their home in Dunholme, Lincoln, to where Mr Godfrey-Jull was living in Chatham, Kent.
Then, on the morning of the tragedy, they headed from Chatham to visit Mrs Mickleburgh's mother Ann Purnell in Waterloo, London.
They arrived at 1pm before setting off on the return journey to Dunholme three hours later - despite Mickleburgh having had virtually no rest.
Avik Mukherjee, prosecuting, said Mickleburgh had enjoyed a maximum of just 90 minutes sleep since waking at 11am the day before.
He said: "That amount of sleep was grossly inadequate. That nap - and that is all it was - could not offset the sleepiness on that straight, featureless road."
Mr Mukherjee told the court there was no other explanation as to why the Passat had drifted off the carriageway and ploughed into the tree.
Mickleburgh, of Tennyson Drive, Dunholme, denies causing death by dangerous driving as a result of the incident, and the trial continues.
